How to avoid being sucked into ongoing charges on internet purchases

I've been pretty luck with my try before you buy experiences but I have heard horror stories about people who purchased from companies that just kept billing.  The only time I ever had trouble getting out of a free trial offer was with a popular brand of coffee.  Nuff said there.  I finally did get out of the program but not before I paid for a lot more coffee at the higher price than I ever wanted to buy.
